Alec Waxman's work blends landscape painting, technology, and architecture to explore the interaction between man and nature. After relocating from New York to Israel in 2021, he was immediately drawn to the country’s surreal landscapes, particularly its desert expanses, and he began to investigate how diverse populations and topographies coexist in such close proximity. His paintings juxtapose landscapes with figures and dreamlike architectures to conjure a sense of fantasy and create an illusion of privacy and isolation.

Rooted in the traditions of surrealism and transcendentalism, Waxman creates hyper-worldly compositions that feel both familiar and unexpected, offering viewers a chance to reimagine their surroundings. His paintings often portray small, non-descriptive figures in vast landscapes, probing the tension and power struggle between man and nature.

In a country grappling with conflict and claustrophobia, the infinite horizons of the desert and sea symbolize freedom and solace, and Waxman’s transportive compositions respond to a heightened need for escapism. His work invites viewers to find surrealism in the everyday, offering an escape into an alternative vision of the world—extraordinary yet possible.

In his most recent body of work, Waxman draws on his background in computer science and software development, incorporating generative AI tools to expand and enhance his artistic process. While painting remains at the core of his practice, he often begins with his own photography, using AI to create surrealistic compositions that synthesize his visual ideas and aesthetic decisions. These digital explorations serve as sketches or frameworks, which he then translates into paintings—sometimes further evolving them into animated works or video art. This hybrid approach allows him to bridge the digital and physical, blending technology with tradition to reimagine what painting can be in an age of increasingly robust generative technologies.
